Tiles That Bind

The sidewalks within the Acadian Memorial Meditation Garden at the foot of the Deportation Cross are covered with mosaic Acadian Family Coats of Arms. The muted colors of broken Italian tiles come together as a work of art, symbolic of the families separated by exile and reunited in Louisiana. These are fitting tributes to the Acadian families they represent and a way to remember these brave and courageous souls.

Four granite plaques were also installed to recognize and honor the four Acadian Governors of Louisiana.

(Acadian Family Coats of Arms were funded with grants from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Acadiana Arts Council). Individual Acadian families with matching and full funds funded some of the Family Coats of Arms.
